Temperbead Overlay PQR

Temperbead Overlay PQR

Temperbead Overlay PQR

(OP)
Does anyone have knowledge or experience with temperbead overlay weld qualification per Code Case N638.

Is it OK to treat this PQR depicted in the code case as a partial penetration groove weld and cut off the bottom at the fusion line and discard the bottom, and only side bending the portion with the weld?  I know that one can do this with a normal partial pen groove weld, but can you do this on a temperbead weld qual, or do you have to side bend the entire plate thickness which is typically about 2-3 inches?

RE: Temperbead Overlay PQR

Metalmeister;
Why can't you follow the current requirements in ASME Section IX for WPS/PQR regarding temper bead welding in Article II, QW-290?

Thank you for your response, Metengr.  However, Qw-290 states:  "When the applicable Code section specifies the use of this para. for temperbead welding, QW-290.1-.6 applies."

Part of the problem is that no where in ASME III, XI or CC N-638 does the Code specify the use of QW-290, although general requirements for temperbead welding in IWA-4610(b) refers generically to Section IX for qualification.

So assuming that we use the partial penetration groove weld config as shown in the code case as well as ASME III and XI, partial penetration rules would allow discard of the bottom half of the plate from the fusion line down.

Would that be your view as well?

Thank you.

RE: Temperbead Overlay PQR

Metalmeister;
Yes, I would agree with your position. However, lets go back to what I mentioned. The phrase in Section IX regarding ".....specifies the use of this par. for temper bead welding..." In my opinion this does not necessarily imply that QW-290 has to be referenced specifically. It is my opinon and not that of Section I that the mention of temper bead welding is only needed and not specific reference to paragraph QW-290.

Thank you, Metengr.  Your response has been helpful, and I appreciate your opinion; and I believe it is on firm footing.

So in this case the PQR must try to use apply corrosion resistant weld overlay clad criteria of Section IX, where it does not conflict with either CC N638 or ASME III and XI. In my view then applying partial pen rules to the PQR would not be appropriate.
