Autoturn Parking Lots

Autoturn Parking Lots

Autoturn Parking Lots

(OP)
Most ordinances that I have seen governing parking space sizing require 90 degree parking spaces to be either 9'x18'with a 24' drive aisle or 9'x20' with a 20' drive aisle.  Either size is too tight for a passenger vehicle in either Autoturn or using my old turning templates.  I know that cars park on this size of space all of the time.

Is Autoturn overly conservative for such use?  Should we design parking lots larger from now on?

RE: Autoturn Parking Lots

Is the forward speed set sufficiently slow in AutoTurn? When I'm parking, the speedo hardly registers sometimes, which must certainly be below 2mph and possibly less than 1mph. (Which seems reasonable given peds speed past at approx. 3mph).

RE: Autoturn Parking Lots

I think the Autoturn passenger vehicle is 19' (but please check this).  This vehicle length represents the largest pick-up trucks or SUVs.  So, yes it is very conservative.

If you try to make a vehicle of this size back out of a space, when all vehicles adjacent to the vehicle are also 19', I believe you will run into some issues.  But we all know this is not a "real-world" situation.
