How do you do a section view in part design

How do you do a section view in part design

How do you do a section view in part design

(OP)
This seems like it should be so simple.  The help file tells me its on my views/annotations tool bar.  I have a view toolbar, but I don't have a viewS tool bar.  I can go into views menu and turn on and off the annotation tool bar, but nothing appears or disappears from my screen.

I'm running version 5 R18

RE: How do you do a section view in part design

It sounds like you're trying to create the Section Annotation View with the FTA workbench - is that correct?

I don't know what FTA workbench is.  I don't think so.  I'm just in part design mode (not drawings)  I just want to section through the part so I can see some features that are blocked by others.  In Solidworks you simply hit the section view button and can select a plane and dynamily cut through the part.  Same with NX6.  Not sure why it seems to be so elusive in Catia.

RE: How do you do a section view in part design

Hi,

You have multiple choices (not quite like in SW):

- hide those features which block your view.
- insert the CATPart in a fake CATProduct and use sectioning tool like in SW.
- create planes (this is not dynamic) and use visualization toolbar in a sketch defined in that plane.

Fernando

RE: How do you do a section view in part design

Some of the terminology you were using made me think you were using the FTA workbench - sorry.

Ferdo is right - there are several ways to section in 3D. His second method (Sectioning tool in Assembly Design workbench) is probably the closest method to SW, plus it is dynamic.

and there are several other ways as well:

4. create a plane and use the GSD Intersection with the Part Bodies
5. create a plane and temporarily SPLIT the PartBodies
6. make a drawing and create multiple Section Views or Section Cuts
7. use FTA annotation view

RE: How do you do a section view in part design

Ferdo's second method is best.

RE: How do you do a section view in part design

I use the proposed second option from Ferdo, I always model in some kind of product context and it's available in Assembly designer also. I have tried the FTA annotation view but I think you need the FTA module to activate the clipping or set up the captures, don't think the intent is for this kind of use. Another useful option is that in sketcher you have the "cut part with sketcher" that I use frequently.
