Heat treatment of 17-7 ph-austenite cond.

Heat treatment of 17-7 ph-austenite cond.

Heat treatment of 17-7 ph-austenite cond.

(OP)
One of our heat treaters mistakenly used the 1750 RH table for time at Autenite cond temp(only 40 min) when he should have gone 90 min. Final cond should be TH1050. He then followed the Transformation below 60° and he Age at 1050 for 90 min.
I thick the material responded and got the correct hardness.
Do we re-heat-treat?Sol'n Aneal? Reaustenite Cond? Leave it alone?

RE: Heat treatment of 17-7 ph-austenite cond.

If the parts are thin and your mechanicals look right then you are fine.  Run a tensile test and see.

The parts are .04" sheet and are know buried in a structure.
Can not run a tensile.

RE: Heat treatment of 17-7 ph-austenite cond.

Where are the coupons that you run with each load for verification of properties?  Or don't you care?
If you can't test the actual parts you should always runs coupons from the same lot of sheet along with each load.

RE: Heat treatment of 17-7 ph-austenite cond.

Don't expect TH1050 properties.  I'm chart only goes to 1600F resulting in: Ult. 182KSI, Yield 152KSI, 12% Elongation.  At 1750F Ult and Yield strenght would go down and elongation would go up.  % of retained austenite would go way up since you can't transform the austenite to martensite at RT.  I would pull these parts from your structure unless this is ground equipment.
