Vibration sensoring: What is significant ?

Vibration sensoring: What is significant ?

(OP)
Hi there!
I am working on a Mesureing System for mechanical Vibrations. I will use an Accelerometer and process the data with LabView.
Through Integration i can get Velocity and Displacement, right ?
What is significant data or plots for a vibration ?
Can i mesure/calculate Frequency as well ?
Thnax Alex

RE: Vibration sensoring: What is significant ?

Well, you can integrate the accelerometer signal in the time domain to obtain velocity, and then integrate again to obtain displacement.  A potential problem is that any spurious offset in the acceleration signal will cause huge errors in the velocity time history.  Even greater errors will occur in the displacement time history.

Thus, the accelerometer signal should be highpass filtered prior to integration.  Preferably, the highpass filtering should be performed on the analog accelerometer signal, prior to digitization.  However, the highpass filtering may be performed on the digital signal, if necessary.

A complete answer to your question is beyond the scope of a message board reply.  I have posted some relevant software programs and tutorials on signal processing at:

http://www.vibrationdata.com

As disclosure, a very small fee is required to download the software and tutorials at this website.

Sincerely, Tom Irvine

RE: Vibration sensoring: What is significant ?

You need to determine the requirement for measurement first, then consider everything you want to monitor or analyze.  Be specific, focus on what it is you are looking for.

RE: Vibration sensoring: What is significant ?

Check out the applicaiton note section on www.reliabilitydirect.com. There is articles on sensor selection and integration.
