Modeling a dowel hole in NX 5.0.4.1 MP6

Modeling a dowel hole in NX 5.0.4.1 MP6

Modeling a dowel hole in NX 5.0.4.1 MP6

(OP)
Hello,

I am tring to model a dowel hole in NX5 and keep getting an error. Since the change to NX5 from NX3, my hole UDF's no longer work. The error I am getting is when I try to place a larger dia. simple hole over a smaller dia simple hole. The larger is shorter in length of course. The error is as follows:

"No closest face found within tolerance for Normal to Face direction option."

Any sugestions?

I use "along vector" in that situation.

Thanks, that worked. But I think I liked the old hole creation method better especially since the new one takes 10 to 15 seconds for the dialog box to pop-up after I click the icon.

I don't understand. Is there a setting that adds the NX3 hole tool?

Why don't you just use a Counterbored-Hole and do it all in one operation?

It's still a 2 step operation since I would have to add a chamfer to the face of the c'bore.

OK then, use the approach recommended by 'ewh' and use the cylindrical face of the first hole to define the vector.

But that brings up the question, these dowel pins, are they tapered pins?  If they are, I know some places use stepped holes, as you're doing (and which we did where I worked, at least sometimes), as alternative to using a special tapered drill bit, but in case you do ever consider going the tapered hole route, starting in NX 6.0 we added an additional General Hole 'Form', 'Tapered', which might be of interest to you.

Actually, the larger hole is just a clearance hole for a slip-fit dowel. Order of operation is a 1/4 thru wire start hole for a wire EDM, then a drilled clearance hole leaving 2X the dowel pin dia for land. For a press fit, it's 1/4 thru (depending on dowel size, larger for larger dowels, the pre-ream drill to 2.5X dowel dia depth, then reamer.
I had UDF's made for all these. I just need to redo them so they work correctly in NX5.
