316 Stainless Steel Access Ladders

316 Stainless Steel Access Ladders

316 Stainless Steel Access Ladders

(OP)
Dear All,

The contract specs recommend to use 316 grade stainless steel for marine access ladders. The marine project calls for repair and restoration of Piers and Wharves for a Naval Base. Given the 10 year guarantee clause for the project, We the Contractors are doubtful about the Quality performance of 316 stainless steel in such high chloride marine environment.

Does 316 resists corrosion due to sea water for a longer span. If yes, how much would be the duration?

The 316 material shall conform to the requirements of ASTM A 240M.

Please comment and help us in a proper material selection for the Project.

RE: 316 Stainless Steel Access Ladders

not easy to say... 10 years in seawater can give some problems of pitting corrosion... considering that it's a naval base i'll go to a duplex - super duplex and you'll be sure that there will be no prolem...

RE: 316 Stainless Steel Access Ladders

I would say for a ladder in a marine environment, I would probably go with a duplex stainless steel bar specification, like

ASTM A 479  UNS S31803,

not ASTM A 240.

RE: 316 Stainless Steel Access Ladders

farhanjn,

If the ladder is a welded assembly it should be made from 316L material. I have designed deck fittings, cranes, and other items exposed to constant salt water mist exposure on the decks of very high end yachts. Every yacht in the world uses 316 castings or 316L weldments or 5086/5083 aluminum constructuion when exposed to salt water.

I have used Duplex stainless steel for propulsion shafting, but that's the only application I have seen.

RE: 316 Stainless Steel Access Ladders

The reason that 316 works on yachts is that it get washed and waxed regularly.
316 is not suitable for long term coastal exposure without maintenance.
Use S32205 (not S31803) alloy 2205 at a minimum.  It is much stronger than 316 and more corrosion resistant.
It is available in just about all product forms and it is readily weldable with 2209 filler.
The fabrication and welding guides from Outokumpu are a great source.

RE: 316 Stainless Steel Access Ladders

My question is if is better Outokumpu LDX or 316 for marine post building?

for a new question it is best to start a new thread.
