Is anyone else having troubles when trimming lines in NX6?
this is starting to get anoying as it will lock up the session and your done. A quick exit and return seems to fix for a short time.

RE: trimming lines

If you can reproduce this, please contact GTAC and have them open an IR/PR.  If no one reports this, no one will follow-up.

RE: trimming lines

This happened to me just this morning. I was trimming a line to an arc and got the message invalid object for operation. It updated the part several times giving the same error message each time then it said something about the command failed because an undo mark was missing; it then warned me that NX was in an error condition and it was best to restart. Annoying, but at least it was a controlled crash; not like those 'fatal error - see you later' type crashes.

I have not been able to reproduce it yet.

i did report it. they are working on it now, at first they could not duplicate it but i sent files and they see it now.

cowski - it does happen more often when trimming lines to arcs.

RE: trimming lines

You'd have to wonder what's wrong with getting lines and arcs in curve creation to trim and extend using the same techniques as the sketcher apart from anything else.

RE: trimming lines

Interesting to note: our lathe guy sometimes has similar problems with trimming his 2d curves (both NX5&6). But, when I go over to have him show me the problem - it works fine. Hmmmm...

RE: trimming lines

I never have any problem trimming 2D or 3D curves in model space I just begin to resent that the commands are often quite painstaking compared with the "quick trim" and "quick extend" that are now available inside the sketcher.

RE: trimming lines

Hudson,

Many NC programmers still use 2d curved for most toolpath boundary type geometry. I know it's been beat into our heads to use sketcher for everything but... quick and dirty works. I expect in the not too distant future though, explicit 2d curves will be a thing of the past. Heck it's just this year I've decided to stick with the newer hole creation (position sketch based) rather than the Pre-NX5 hole function. : )

RE: trimming lines

Bill,

I don't think explict 2D curves will ever be done away with and I wouldn't welcome it. There are so many things that you can do with geometry that would be limited by using 2D sketches that I'm not seeing the demise of curves any time soon.

Anyone ignorant enough to beat the use of sketcher into you probably isn't worth listening to in my book. The beauty of NX is contained within its flexibility. There's a tool of everything and sometimes there are several. Many times one is preferable to another, but to cut yourself off from the ability to use any of them effectively is like buying a rifle and taking away the bullets because you argue that you can fix a bayonet to the end of it.

I have a bit of experience in machining and know what you mean by boundary geometry or even using drive curves where the explicit centreline of the cutter is easier to describe than the cut geometry. Many people prefer such methods for lettering or for making certain types of cams.

What I think we're taking to may be conversations at cross purposes then. I'm simply observing that the intuitive "quick trim" and "quick extend" using the sketcher in later versions of NX are kind of quick and easy compared with the trim and divide curves dialogs that we're stuck with when working in model space. My suggestion then would be to improve the tools for working with curves in model space rather than defer to the sketcher for everything.

On the other hand the reverse applies and one could rightly ask why not ensure that a system that supports useful functionality with sketches shouldn't be used to best advantage where machining is concerned. If there's any reason why you can't sketch a boundary or project the sketch curves for use in making cutter paths then likewise you ought to be able to request that this is improved in upcoming versions of NX.

RE: trimming lines

Our IT guy has been in contact with GTAC, my coworker was having a terrible time with the trim command. Apparently it is scheduled to be fixed in the MP3 release (I don't know when that will be) and a workaround is to choose the associative option before performing the trim then edit the feature to unassociate it. The problem only really showed up on my coworker's computer so it may have to do with a certain combination of settings and/or hardware.

RE: trimming lines

If you're talking about the MP3 release for NX 5.0.6.3, that should be in a couple of weeks or so.

RE: trimming lines

I'm on NX6. I understand MP2 will be sometime in June. I'll talk to my IT guy, maybe he and GTAC weren't on the same page.

RE: trimming lines

Please don't confuse MP's (Maintenance Patches) with MR's (Maintenance Releases).

The NX 6.0.3.6 MR is scheduled for June.

The MP2 package for NX 6.0.2.8 has been available for a couple of weeks now for download from the GTAC support site.
