Crushing load on HSS

Crushing load on HSS

Crushing load on HSS

(OP)

I am reviewing an application that uses a HSS8x4x1/4 as dunnage to distribute a 38 kip load across a solid mat of 6x6 timbers on a slab on grade.

Can someone point me to a reference for checking the "crushing" effect of this load on the HSS?

The load is applied by a shore leg with a 5-7/8 square, 3/8 thick end plate.

Excellent Book, "Hollow Structural Sections Connections and Trusses" by Packer and Henderson and available through the CISC in Canada.

A concentrated load on a tube won't take too much. If you want to analyze it (by yield line) refer to Blodgett "Design of Welded Structures".

Personnally, I would just weld a thick face plate on the tube to adequately transfer the load to the walls.

RE: Crushing load on HSS

AISC 13th Chapter K and the commentary may be a little help.
