RE:Spelling errors in subject lines

RE:Spelling errors in subject lines

RE:Spelling errors in subject lines

(OP)
When replying or forwarding an email message that has a spelling error in the subject line, do you typically correct the error?  I don't like perpetuating a mistake, however correcting the error will mess up email programs that sort by threads.

RE: RE:Spelling errors in subject lines

I'll make the correction. I don't worry about it messing up the threading features. Spell check before you send if you want all your stuff sorted out correctly!

Best regards,

RE: RE:Spelling errors in subject lines

If it was my error I would correct it. If somebody else's error, I would leave it.

RE: RE:Spelling errors in subject lines

Actually I change the subject line anyway to include the date at the beginning of the subject (for sorting) - like "090512-1433".

RE: RE:Spelling errors in subject lines

I don't have that much time.  Spelling seems to be a dying skill.  I make sure mine are correct.

RE: RE:Spelling errors in subject lines

Replying/forwarding is a dangerous activity.

If I'm quoting someone I'll insert [sic] where they've spelled or worded badly.  I remove swearies to keep our email monkeys happy and then I check that I'm not (unintentionally) forwarding anything that might upset the recipient(s) either immediately or after a few more forwardings.

RE: RE:Spelling errors in subject lines

BigH, can't your email package just sort by date received or sent?

I'm inconsistent, I generally leave it the same but occasionally change it, so long as it's clear it's not my mistake, I make enough of my own without being blamed for anyone else.

KENAT,

Have you reminded yourself of FAQ731-376: Eng-Tips.com Forum Policies recently, or taken a look at posting policies: http://eng-tips.com/market.cfm?
What is Engineering anyway: FAQ1088-1484: In layman terms, what is "engineering"?

RE: RE:Spelling errors in subject lines

I leave it but make sure my own are free of mistakes.

RE: RE:Spelling errors in subject lines

Like Kenat I'm inconsistent in my approach. But thinking about it, if I'm just replying then I'd probably leave mispelling alone, but if forwarding to new recipients I think I mostly correct the title.

RE: RE:Spelling errors in subject lines

KENAT - I use outlook - and yes, it can support by date - but we have limits on the storage - so if I save the emails to a folder, I end up with many emails of the same name - and this creates confusion when trying to find something - so I do this and the subject, which appears as the file name when saved as such, is in chronological order.  As I do not profess to understand the intricacies - this works for me.

RE: RE:Spelling errors in subject lines

I found Windows Desktop Search tool indispensible for finding old messages, it lets me drop a lot of the sorting workarounds I used to spend time on.

RE: RE:Spelling errors in subject lines

I will always correct the subject line, something that Spell check can't do on any platform it seems. Also when inquiries come into me to techsupport@... the subject is usually Web Site Inquiry, I will change to subject line for the customer to thread from.  If it's an identifiable part, then I will use that as my subject line, otherwise I use the subject matter.

RE: RE:Spelling errors in subject lines

Actually Outlook 2007 checks the subject during spell check, and I'm pretty sure older versions did as well.  People are just too lazy to turn on the spell check.

RE: RE:Spelling errors in subject lines

blah to auto-correct.  I don't trust MS to figure out what I'm trying to say.  At least with spell check you can just hit Ignore and be done with it (or add it to your dictionary so it quits flagging it)

RE: RE:Spelling errors in subject lines

Outlook "corrects" one of our products from its true name to "VICTIMS",  another one to "FARCE".

RE: RE:Spelling errors in subject lines

In T'bird the subject line is spellchecked for you and I would always correct the subject.

drawn to design, designed to draw

RE: RE:Spelling errors in subject lines

Unlike mloew, I generally leave it uncorrected, mainly because I find it handy to trace a sequence of e-mails by "Conversation" in Outlook. If you correct the spelling of the heading, Outlook probably won't recognise the two or more e-mails as being part of the same "Conversation".
