(OP)
Have seen this on a couple websites as a bug, but no fix for it that I could find.

We recently upgraded our drafting dept to Acad2009, and on 2 of the machines (the rest are fine) the paintbrush icon appears next to the crosshair, like when the match properties command is active.  The only thing is, it never goes away, regardless of which command is active.  Line, erase, circle, etc.  Seems to work just fine, but is distracting for the user.  Has anyone run across a fix for this?

Have all applicable service packs for acad 09 installed, latest video drivers.  Have tried changing from Direct3d to OpenGl, as well as disabling hardware accel.  Still happens, and I'm at a loss, other than uninstalling and reinstalling which I'd prefer not to do at this point.
