Power Transfer Limitation

Power Transfer Limitation

Power Transfer Limitation

(OP)
Consider having a power system with generating capacity of about 1000MW and peak load of about 700 MW.  COnsider it interlinked into a bigger system with.  Power system studies identified the limit of power transfer (import/export) to be about 100MW.  If there is a plan to install additional generator of about 130MW in the system, what will be its effect on the power transfer limitation.  It can be assume that the interlinking transmission line has a capacity of about 1200MVA and the interlinked transformer has a capacity of about 1000MVA.

In another case, what could be the effect of installation of another interlinked line from the small system to another bigger system, which is also interlinked to the first big system but maybe two buses away from the interlinked between the small system. COuld this improve the power transfer ability of the small system?

RE: Power Transfer Limitation

Yes it could, but to prove it you will need to carry out a full system study. Load flows/stability etc. Any interconnection should improve the power transfer capability.
I'm not sure what kind of answer you'd expect for such a vague question.

Marmite

RE: Power Transfer Limitation

The first question is what is limting your power transfer to 100 mW.

RE: Power Transfer Limitation

Question looks an awful lot like a school problem.

Thank you Mr. Marmite...I really wanted to only get a general answer/impression at first given this general scenario...and thanks for the reply.

Now to go to some specifics, Mr. Waross...the 100 MW limitation was identified based on stability studies considering many different scenarios involving outages of plant and faults at 115 kV and 380 kV.  Btw, intertie is at 380 kV.  The study involved critical clearing times, load flow and short circuit conditions during these different scenarios.  I do understand that detailed stability study should be done again considering the additions I mentioned in my original post but because I currently do not have the tool to do the simulations myself, I am initially trying to find out the most probable (if we can call it that) effect of these projects.  My goal is to improve/increase the transfer capability of our system (the small system).

Thanks all for the replies and will continue to appreciate your inputs.

".the 100 MW limitation was identified based on stability studies considering many different scenarios involving outages of plant and faults at 115 kV and 380 kV. "
I would be looking at these factors and the effect of greater loading.
For instance, if the loading on an inter-tie line is such that it is not wise to backfeed more than a given amount the intertie may have to be paralleled to increase the capacity.
The point is that it is difficult to give helpful answers without knowing the reason for your limits.
