Black backgound on screen

Black backgound on screen

(OP)
The latest (?) version of AutoCad seems to default to a white background... a lot of drawings at work have been made with the idea of a black background... yellow and green lines were a favourite with one user...

How.. Where can I change this.. AutoCad 2009.. (I think, I am a very part time user and it's at work where I can not check at the moment)

RE: Black backgound on screen

I hate yellow and green lines on a white background...  When they are PDFed or imported into another program -  they are very hard to see.

Ralph2:   Go to Tools | Options | Display.  Click on Colors.  Should be obvious from there.

Mike,
That is exactly the reason that I dislike the black background.  Colors that look really good on a black background can look washed out in a PDF or on paper.  For the nominal black lines Autocad can change them to white in model space, but it doesn't do that for any of the other colors.  I'm changing my model space to white now that I know how.

I agree that modeling on white makes sense due to eventually printing on white... But we have a lot of legacy drawings made by draftspersons that claimed they would go blind to look at a white screen all day.  These are the same guys that moved from white paper.. mylar.. rulers.. erasers and 5 different pencils.

Thanks RHTPE.. but your setup is different from mine.... From "Tools" I have a ribbon that has a "Customization" box. In that window there is a "User Interface"... which opens a box where every command ever created seems to reside... Except how to change the color of the background.

Thanks Exxit... that link gave me the help I needed..Simple but extremely well hidden.. Thanks AutoCad guys.. Newer is NOT better.

You can type OP on the command line and get to the same place

Ralph2:   Click on the red "A" in the upper left corner of the AutoCAD screen - it will display the previous pull-down menus that you should be familar with.  Then follow the steps above.

Or type "OP" on the command line, hit enter, as IFRs suggested.

In the bottom right corner is an icon that looks like a cog. It allows you to change "workspaces." If you click on it, you can select "AutoCAD Classic" and have all the traditional menus available. (And no more ribbon.)

Now that was the best tip yet... Thank you francesca. I know Auto Desk needs to make it look different to sell it.. But they are not doing users any favors... in my opinion.
New features and easier ways to do things are fine.. but the cosmetics... leave them alone!

RE: Black backgound on screen

Oh, wow.  A way to get rid of that accursed "A".

Maybe I'll start using 2009 now...

The Ribbon is not so bad - once you get used to it.

The Quick Access Toolbar is also great, and easy to add/remove commands.

I am sure one could get used to it... and enjoy the convenience of them... I am a "very" occasional user anymore, and the "learning" I did was on AutoCad12.
The company I work for (a jobbing shop) has for the most part moved to SolidWorks and it has become the preferred drafting program.

RE: Black backgound on screen

The 2009 ribbon is good for new users, but crap for people who know their way around. I get frustrated having to click between tabs (home and tools mostly). The 2010 ribbon is improved. E.g. in Civil 3D 2010, just about everything you need is on one ribbon panel.

RE: Black backgound on screen

I use a dark or light gray background and white only for paperspace.  Pen controls convert my layering scheme to lineweights so no worries about reading when the dwg is pure black.
