Wall thickness Calc. for a 30" Paddle Blind

Wall thickness Calc. for a 30" Paddle Blind

Wall thickness Calc. for a 30" Paddle Blind

(OP)
I require a 30" Paddle Blind to be used on a Produced Emulsion Line between a 30" RFWN flange and a 30" Gate Valve with RF ends.

Line Info: (Operating Pres. = 1500 kPag, Operating Temp. = 183 deg C ; Design Press. = 4000 kPag, Design Temp. = 220 deg C ; Test Press. = 5000 kPag - Water)

A vendor has sent me a drawing but I wish to verify the proposed wall thickness.

Paddle Blind Info:  (Material = SA516-70N ; Diameter = 37.38" ; Blank thickness = 2.380")

I am currently looking at ASME 31.3 Eq'n 15 paragraph 304.5.3 but am unsure of what values to use for some of the variables in the equation.

Equation Info I am using:

c = 0.5 mm ?

dg = ?

P = 4000 kPag

S = Yield Strength from Table A-1? (i.e. 23.1 ksi)

W = ?

E = ?

Can anyone comment on where I should look to find the missing information?  I am an E.I.T. new to the oil and gas industry and I do not have much experience with this formula so please excuse me if I have overlooked something obvious.

Thanks in advance for the advice.

malzer-

If you have access to B16.48, you should look it up and try to run the calc's for a 24" diameter and see if you match up. That'll give you some confidence that you are running the numbers correctly.

http://catalog.asme.org/Codes/PrintBook/B1648_2005_Line_Blanks.cfm

You can find the gasket inside diameter in B16.20 http://catalog.asme.org/Codes/PrintBook/B1620_2007_Metallic_Gaskets.cfm or http://www.flexitallic.com/pdf/broSpiralWound.pdf

The blind should be cut from a single plate with no welds. Thus, E=1 and W=1.

Keep in mind that the analysis behind the formula is linear and rather conservative. Some guy in Canada ran some numbers to show just how conservative: http://store.asme.org/product.asp?catalog%5Fname=Conference+Papers&;category%5Fname=&product%5Fid=PVP2005%2D71164

and thanks for the good advice jte...I will verify my equation by confiming the values in the B16.48 tables
