TEMA STANDARD TRANSVERSE BAFFLE THK

TEMA STANDARD TRANSVERSE BAFFLE THK

TEMA STANDARD TRANSVERSE BAFFLE THK

(OP)
I would like to have confirmation about the unsupported tube length to be considered when choosing the thickness of the transverse baffles in a TEMA C heat exchanger with single segmental baffle cut.
In particular it will be from face to face of two near baffles (so in the central not cutted area) or from face to face of two baffles across the cut and so about the double of the previous one?
Thank You

RE: TEMA STANDARD TRANSVERSE BAFFLE THK

PRESS72, your second instance is correct, the unsupported tube span is twice the baffle pitch for single seg baffles, and for double seg as well.

As you noted this span is used for selecting the baffle thickness from the table.

This or a different span may govern for UHX tubesheet calculations.

Regards,

Mike

RE: TEMA STANDARD TRANSVERSE BAFFLE THK

Thank Mike,

this was not the answer I would like to riceive!
But what do You think about the fact that the effective area in which the complete flow of the shell side fluid is in a transverse direction respect the tube axis is in the baffles pitch area. While the flux is quite along the axis of the exchanger tube in the area where the fluid change direction and make the cross on the baffle cut.
My problem is that I've already manufacture an heat exchanger with this consideration and so my customer is asking me a 5 mm thk baffle instead of a 4mm that I've used.

Thank You again
Luigi

RE: TEMA STANDARD TRANSVERSE BAFFLE THK

GIGI72, I am not able to tell if you are the OP or not, but the TEMA Table R- / CB- 4.41 is simple and self expanatory.

It is only useful for selecting the baffle thickness based on the baffle pitch.

I am not sure what to make of your second and third sentences, except to say, this is normally what makes them work.

As for the dispute with the customer, you will just have to work it out.

Good luck,

Mike
