font on sheet

font on sheet

font on sheet

(OP)
Runnign SW 06.

I want to change my default font in my sheet (not template).

1. I go into options, change the font (specifically dimension font).
2. I do a "save sheet template" to a new one.

...and it should work....?

3.  I open the new sheet template, and it is back to "Century Gothic" font, despite my save....

Any ideas what I am doing wrong?

Thanks
Paul

RE: font on sheet

Sheet Format = the drawing border and title block.
Changes are saved via File > Save Sheet Format (.slddrt)

Drawing Template = the document in which the drawing standards and options are set.
Changes are saved via File > Save as > Save as type: Drawing Templates (*.drwdot)

Also check that the Tools > Options > System Options > File Locations folders are pointing to the correct folders.

CBL,

Thanks, but I think I have this covered.  I am indeed putting the drawing border and block in the sheet....I think what you are saying is that the template font will always override any font that is in the sheet.  I think than this might be in vain...but....

My problem stems from wanting to do a right click and swap a template, ie the drawing standards, like one can easily swap sheets.  The reason is that I work with multiple companies with multiple standards, and need to make a final drawing to their specs.  An option is to setup a custom template from the beginning (one template for each company), and use it during development.  However, this is confusing and easy for mix-ups, etcs (OK, I am getting old...).  Seems a better solution to make all design work in "my" template since I know all dim tolerances etc, from memory, etc etc, and then swap the title block WITH their company fonts, at the end, when making the final spec.  Maybe bass-ackwards for some...anyway, I thought I can do this by exchanging sheets.

Any input?  Don't I have some work-around option by playing with the SW default template (like the equivalent of the "normal.dot" in MS word)?

RE: font on sheet

Anything under the Document Properties tab in Options window gets saved with the file.  These are not changes to your system settings.  Only changes made in System Options settings are saved at the system level.  So, as stated, you'll need to save your changes in your sheet format.

RE: font on sheet

Customer specific Sheet Formats can be swapped via the RMB > Properties method. Setting a font in the template (.drwdot) should not affect the font selected in the Sheet Format (.slddrt).

Drawing standards can be changed via the Tools > Options > Document Properties > Drafting Standard.

RE: font on sheet

I am concluding that I am dealing with a bug.

One more question that might help (at least my understanding): if I double-click on my saved sheet format file .slddrt and it shows up in SW...what "options-document properties" should be associated with it?  Would it not use my template "options-system options-default template"?  It is not...some other document properties are being sucked into it...is there another way to tell where this data comes from?

The file locations for "document templates" are pointed to the same folder as the "default templates".  I did notice under file locations "referenced documents"....don't know what this is.....maybe that is something....

If the data is coming from the sheet template itself....it is clearly a bug.  If it is coming from my default template it is clearly a bug....what am I missing?

Thanks for your time guys.

(also CBL, can one create your own drafting std?  In SW 06, the std seems to be under doc properties-detailing...curious if I can create a new one...)

Where are you double-clicking on a sheet format (.slddrt) file? On my system double-clicking in a Windows folder does not open a sheet format in SW, and in the SW File > Open dialogue, I do not have the option to select a .slddrt file.

Some training! Can your company spring for some tutorials from SolidProfessor or igetit? They are well worth the cost.
This may help; http://www.solidworksguru.com/2008/07/what-is-difference-between-sheet.html

Not in SW06. That was introduced in SW09 (or was it '08?).

Hi CBL,

I associated the template file extension to Solidworks so the sheet would open when I double-clicked.  I don't do this to make a drawing in practice, but it makes it quicker to organize and edit my sheets....anyway, it is logical to do this for my troubleshooting.  The question is still the same: if I open the sheet, not a template, where is SW getting the font data?  It is not my default templates.

I'll pass on the training; this is more advanced.  Thanks anyway.
