expansion loops

Can some explain to me how to know when or where in a pipe run an expansion loop is necessary.  I've seen a lot of literature on how to size an expansion loop, but haven't seen any explaining, where along the pipe run one is needed.

Thanks for your help.

RE: expansion loops

Expansion loops are used to allow pipe to expand when heated. The thermal expansion of the pipe is given in mm/m/deg C (or the equivalent in imperial).

Long runs of hot pipe are when an expansion loop is necessary, also necessary when you anchor the pipe at both ends.

Thanks for that information, but I guess my question is what is considered a "long run of pipes" where I should consider using an expansion loop ?  Is there any standard, guideline or calculation that tells me when an expansion loop is needed.

RE: expansion loops

It's not so much "long run" as it is how much expansion are you looking at? What's the service? How long are your runs?

RE: expansion loops

over 100 feet of straight pipe is considered a long length that needs expansion loop.
If you use copper piping (typical for 2" and smaller) you could get 1" of expansion per 100 foot. Check your local Metraflex guy, they have have some good info.
