Best Corrosion Resistant Metal

Best Corrosion Resistant Metal

(OP)
What is the best corrsion resistant metal that can be used in a 12% sodium chloride brine solution.  The solution is at ambient temperature and the pH is about 7.  Materials could be stainless or otherise

RE: Best Corrosion Resistant Metal

What is the price you are willing to play will have a major role in selection from list of candidate materials.

RE: Best Corrosion Resistant Metal

What product forms do you need? (pumps, valves, pipe, tube, tanks???)  How will the system be assembled? welding?
How clean is the NaCl?  Is is man made or natural?

There are a group of alloys that should work fine in this, but product form will dictate everything.

RE: Best Corrosion Resistant Metal

As stated above there are many materials used in sodium chloride brines depending on chemistry and temperatures  Brine solutions can be very tricky with materials selection.  If you have corrosion inhibitors in the system that are properly maintained (big IF) then carbon steel can work if the temperature is not too low for design MDMT, arbon steel can have a low temperature limit per the ASME Code, or the brine does not get too hot.  We have used lean duplex stainless steels recently with good success.  I know of other plants that use standard duplex stainless steel all the way up to 6Mo alloys.  In my opinion the major factors are corrosion inhibitors, chemistry maintenance and temperatures of the brine.

RE: Best Corrosion Resistant Metal

Based on the "light" description of your process you should consider alloys that resist pitting and chloride stress corrosion cracking, ones high in chromium and molybdenum. Alloys C-22, C-276 and their variants are possible candidates.

The best corrosion resistant metal doen´t exists.
