Hi everybody,

There is a new regulation in Canada on fuel tank that says that ify you have above ground single wall pipes you need to have a corosion program or full time electronic survaillance or monthly visual inspection or precision leak detection test each year.

I have many double walled tanks on remote location with a distributor for jet fuel for helicopter. The single walled pipe are between the tank and the pump of the distributor. I dont want to do what the regulation asked because it is to complicated and costly for us.  So I think I have no choice of replacing the pipes or to put secondairy confinement under it.

Let me know your opinions or advices

thanks

RE: above ground double walled pipe with valvle

What is so tough about a "monthly visual inspections" for above ground single wall pipes.  If the operators cannot log monthly inspections, perhaps you should find new operators.

Problem is that theses tanks are remote, very remote, on islands in the middle of the sea or in the artic.  These tanks are used a lot in the summer time but in the winter nobody goes there.

RE: above ground double walled pipe with valvle

Surely there is an exception for equipment that is not in service. If you drain the pipe and blind it away from the tank in winter, can you qualify for an exception from monthly inspection?  I should think this would be a good idea anyway. You really don't want to have to deal with the cost of a clean-up if a line were to rupture when the system is unattended.

Its probably soooooo cold up there that even kero would freeze, so you should be draining the pipes during the winter anyway.  I doubt the regulations for inspection apply to empty pipe, temporarily out of service pipes and equipment, etc.
