Building ingress and egress codes for Kysor Building

Building ingress and egress codes for Kysor Building

Building ingress and egress codes for Kysor Building

(OP)
We are expanding a control building and a question came up about adding an additional door to meet certain codes and requirements.

I am not much familiar with building design codes and wanted to see if you all could guide me in the right direction.

1- Is there a code requiring how many doors one need based on the size of the building?

2- Is there a code requiring how far the two doors should be from each other? and if so, how far?

3- Any other requirements that I need to be aware of? such as a need for fire extinguishers etc if the building is above a certain size.

I will appreciate comments from some of the experts here.

Thanks
zazmat

RE: Building ingress and egress codes for Kysor Building

These are building code and fire code questions.  You should red-flag this post and ask that it be moved to the fire protection forum.

RE: Building ingress and egress codes for Kysor Building

Fire code agencies write electrical codes, so I'm not sure the distinction between electric power and fire codes is clear.

Here's an answer the fire folk may not provide:

If this is a utility control building subject to NESC, see rule 113. No sizes are mentioned, only plan, character, and arrangement. Since it is difficult to imagine any plan, character or arrangement that would prevent an accident from blocking an exit, our rule is to always provide two.

Other codes will apply regardless if NESC is applicable.

RE: Building ingress and egress codes for Kysor Building

This is a question that should be answered by a licensed architect who is familiar with the applicable codes.

Yes, there are codes that dictate such things depending on the size of the building, type of construction, occupancy, fire protection, etc.
