Spare cable - underground

Spare cable - underground

Spare cable - underground

(OP)
hi,

I heard that it's not really good to leave a spare cable deenergize in an underground conduit

So, what do you do in that situation.

1 - Do you energize it but at only 1 end, so no current will flow into it.  Is there a safety problem with the other end, how do you arrange it to keep it safe?

2 - Do you connect it in parallel with a another cable, let say phase B?  But there, do you calculate the voltage unbalance that this can represent, since the impedance in phase B will be less than the other 2 phases?

3 - Any other idea?

Thanks

RE: Spare cable - underground

Energized from one end as its own circuit. Keeps it thermally stable and gives you an immediate indication of failure.  If it's a spare in place for some specific purpose, you don't want to find out that it isn't any good just when you need it.

RE: Spare cable - underground

Energized from one end - There will be a small amount of current and heat generated by dielectric losses.

Cables should always be assumed to be energized anyway, so safety issues should be manageable.

How long is the cable?

Thank for the answer,

This isn't for a project, just by curiosity and if i'm in front of this situation later, i'll know what to do.  So i don't know lenght of the cable, but what will be different if it's long or not?

I'm just wondering how do you arrange the cable at the end that isn't connected if it's in a switchgear.  Do you roll it and put insulating tape on the end?  or put a surge arrester only for this cable?  I don't know how to place a cable end not connected of an energized cable.

thank
