First time poster...

I am looking for a recommendation on a program for evaluating heat losses through complex fin arrangements (configuration with secondary, tertiary, and even quaternary fins off of the main fin).  I think this must be done by finite element analysis.  

I am a ChemE (3yrs out of school) that evaluates a lot of pipe system and vessel heat losses, and estimating the losses out of the structural steel of pipe supports (or equipment support structures) is a bit more complex than I am comfortable doing in Excel with basic fin heat transfer equations.

I recognize such programs probably aren't cheap.  I have no significant experience of any kind with simulation programs, so I just don't know where to start.

My ideal program would allow for the complex modeling mentioned above, but with simpler heat transfer calculations being possible as well (so I could do an entire heat loss analysis in one place).

Any comments or ideas would be appreciated.

there are several heat transfer texts and handbooks that cover finned elements, but the formulas are so complex you need to code them, spread sheeting them is or can be cumbersome.

These sources only cover simple finned subrates or cylinders, but you might be able to correct for effective surface error.

I have done similar with Comsol Multiphysics with success.
