Hi all,
We are starting to get into fairly large assemblies and associated problems regarding load times, etc. to the extent we have a couple seats of 64bit machines to help when accessing these files. I've been experimenting with different file type conversions and have a few questions.

If we can start our assemblies in machine design with the commonly used files, i.e. chassis part etc., can these files be saved in another file type to become lighter or dumb files, thereby reducing overall file size? We all have fairly hot machines(?), I'm sure as recommended by our VAR. Assuming all parts in an assembly have been created correctly and efficiently, does file size (>1Gb)necessarily bring with it long load times?

Yes by default.

RE: file size

Try using the SpeedPak function on the sub-assys.

Alternatively, if the sub-assys are no longer being edited, they can be saved as a part with the Exterior faces or Exterior components option. They can then be substituted for the actual sub-assys. If the sub-assys are edited though, the change will not be reflected in the saved-as-part.

I have been experimenting saving common subs as part files as you suggest, but the resulting file sizes are larger than the original subs(?)
Where can I find out about Speedpak, never heard of it. Thanks

RE: file size

That can happen sometimes. I don't know why.

I just did a test on a 5.5MB assy; saved as a part with exterior components gave 2.6MB, saved as a part with exterior surfaces gave 1.7MB.
