Pipe to flat sheetmetal pattern

Pipe to flat sheetmetal pattern

Pipe to flat sheetmetal pattern

(OP)
At the moment I'm busy creating an intake suction pipe for a dredging vessel. But I have problems with getting it all to work in NX5.

The situation:

I've one sketch which contains a circle and another sketch at an offset with a sort of dented oval. Both sketches need to be combined into one pipe. I'd get it sort of working with Through Curves, but it's not ideal.

Nevertheless I converted the pipe to sheet metal (in four stages) and tried to create a flat pattern. I get an error that NX cannot compute. I already split the pipe by subtracting the material, so it should me possible to create a flat pattern.

How do I get this to work? And how do I get both sketches combined into one pipe the best?

RE: Pipe to flat sheetmetal pattern

Can you at least provide some pictures of what you've modeled?

To an Engineer, the glass is twice as big as it needs to be.

It's a cutter suction pipe for dredging as seen in the photo below.

The pipe is oval at the intake (half seen at the bottom of the picture), and at the end of the suction pipe it's completely round. This way it can be flange bolted.

RE: Pipe to flat sheetmetal pattern

NX Sheet Metal will not create a flat-pattern of a shape like that since it was designed for straight-break sheetmetal applications such as electrical enclosures and brackets.

Now there may be another approach which might work but we would need an actual part file.  Besides, we might also be able to help with your Surface Thru Curves.

Hi John,

I can't provide you with an NX model because of our company policy.
