Shopping Center Design Criteria

Shopping Center Design Criteria

Shopping Center Design Criteria

(OP)
I just get into a job that requires me to review and evaluate the HVAC system for a soon to be constructed shopping center. What are the design criteria for a shopping center in terms of the following:

1. Design temperature and/or temperature range
2. Air change requirement
3. No. of person per sq.ft or sq.m
4. Type of system and their corresponding advantages and disadvantages
5. kW/ton
6. Life cycle cost

thanks,
maxhead07

RE: Shopping Center Design Criteria

Can we help you size and locate the ductwork as well?

RE: Shopping Center Design Criteria

Chris,
That would be of big help as I also need to determine the air flow capacity for the installation particularly its effects on the cooling capacity.

RE: Shopping Center Design Criteria

I'll say it. Maxhead07, what Chris implied was a design professional in our industry should be able to field your questions. A good start could be finding the proposed tenants for the mall, most retail chains have a "prototype play book" with leasehold minimum criteria the landlord must provide. I have found they have a high tons/sqft built into the lease. I think you will find the professionals here are very helpful but will not do your work.

Thank you DrRTU. What I want to know are the industry standards for a shopping center design criteria since the mall don't have the established set of engineering standards yet.

thank you,

RE: Shopping Center Design Criteria

maxhead, I am not trying to be rude, but you are asking questions such as "advantages and disadvantages" of different HVAC systems. Those are things that are easily researched and you should probably know as a mechanical engineer (or at least know where to look). I think DrRTU is just trying to tell you these forums are for clarification, not as much for a complete design of multiple systems. Thats what MEP engineers get paid to do (key word there being paid).

RE: Shopping Center Design Criteria

But I will answer a couple of your questions. keep in mind these numbers may or may not apply to your specific situation, they are just ball park figures for a "grocery store". 350 sq.ft./ton         125 sq.ft./person       15cfm/person. But I would say not to take those figures to heart. They do not take into account geographical location, and are for cooling only.
