Score on bend line

Score on bend line

Score on bend line

I hope this is easier than I am making it out to be.....

We have some 1/8" thick uhmw sheeting that we bend at 90 degrees.  Prior to bending, we score one side of the sheet 1/16" deep on the bend line.  This keeps the material from springing back to flat after bending.

I need help modeling this 2-step process.  I would prefer a sheet metal part that I could detail the "scoring" process in the flat pattern, and show the final product in the formed view.

Thanks in advance for your suggestions!

RE: Score on bend line

I'd use configurations.  You could model the part as a simple extruded profile and control the fold/unfold with an angular dimension (either 0 or 90) in your sketched profile.

So I would have to manually draw a bend line on the "flat pattern" view?

If your score groove is v-shaped, wouldn't there be a line on the drawing already?

Well, actually it would be a rectangular shaped score (created by table saw blade), but that is a good point.  I could dimension to the center of the notch.

I'd still like to create a sheet metal feature if possible.

RE: Score on bend line

Unless you use configs in a sheet metal part, you will not be able to use the groove (of any shape) because it would change the material thickness ... something which SW cannot compute.

RE: Score on bend line

I think you'll still need configurations, one with the score groove suppressed.  I don't believe you'll be able to generate your flat pattern with an area of inconsistent thickness.  If I recall correctly (and I may not) sheet metal features will barf on anything that has varying thickness.

Thank you guys for defining the limitation.  Now I can quit being stubborn and finish my drawing.

Your quick responses are appreciated.
