All - I would be grateful if you could point me in the direction of some paper, text or other collection of material that presents a dicussion on the impacts of the drilled pier (shaft) construction on existing structures in the area, buried or not.

I am of mind to start with machine foundations and the ensuing vibrations and work my way from there.

Qshake..I don't have a copy readily available, but about 10 years ago the Florida DOT sponsored a research project at Florida International University or Florida Atlantic University (can't recall which) on the effects of drilling shafts immediately adjacent to a newly placed shaft.  It included vibration measurement (for which we provided some testing and consulting) at various points away from the shaft.

I'll see if I can get a copy of that study...meanwhile you might look as well based on that info.

Ron! Yes please. I currently have a situation where I am drilling a secant pile shaft next to an existing loaded 2 pile pile cap (within 2 feet). Does this document address this?

I can't give you references, but I have some experience with drilling shafts through a running sand layer that loosened the sand about 15 feet away.  Also with installing ACIP piles in saturated sand close to and deeper than a group of Franki piles, which caused the Franki pile group to settle several inches.  Third, augering an ACIP pile three diameters from an existing ACIP test pile, pulling the auger without grouting; the ultimate capacity of the existing pile was reduced by 50%.

ROn - Many thanks thats a great start.  I've come across other articles on the web but nothing worth writing home about or I would post here.

I've seen some charts that list thresholds of frequency for various experiences such as perception, structural damage etc.  

I believe I'm on the right track and your paper will help.

Qshake...I have a fair amount of info for general structures subjected to vibrations and the threshold limits for damage.  Some of it is related to railway vibrations, some for pile driving and others just general.  I'll try to post a few of them to see if they help at all.

We're just finishing a small project in South Georgia where a complaint was filed about railway vibrations causing residential structural damage.  We monitored vibrations on two separate occasions using multiple accelerometers at various distances from the source and at the structures....vibration was not an issue.

The Florida DOT has a guideline for controlling construction vibrations when working near existing structures.  I'll see if I can find my copy and upload it as well.
