ASTM A240 lists the yield as 30 ksi and 25 ksi respectively. An old Ryerson book lists the yields as 35 ksi and 30 ksi respectively. I am thinking that perhaps Ryerson was producing a higher grade but we should be using the lower numbers in our design since we don't know ultimately who the supplier will be.

Any comment?

I am not an expert on stainless steels.  From what I've read, there is no well defined yield point for stainless  steel.  The official definition may have changed since 1974.  See the attached PDF for the 1974 2% offset definition.  I would go with the later publication.  Stainless is used more often in the boiler industry and the mechanical field.  Try a Mechanical Engineering, Boiler and Pressure Vessel, or Materials forum.

For ambient temperatures, use 30 ksi for 304 and 25 ksi for 304L. This is from the latest edition of A240.

You may also consider A240-UNS S32101 LDX2101 (2101 lean duplex). Similar in cost to 304 but with significantly higher mechanical properties, closer thermal expansion coefficient to that of carbon steel, better stress corrosion cracking resistance than 304/304L. It may or may not be a good fit for your application but is worth looking into.
