i get a error message saying the default templates are not valid when i try to open an illustrator image. help please.

Thats a strange message. The ai must be saved with compression off out of AI or it can't be read. If you post the file I may be able to take a look at it with AICS2.

Are the correct files specified in Tools > Options > System Options > Default Templates and File Locations.?

Do you have the same result if copying and pasting any image from an OLE compliant viewer.

Which SP of SW2007 ?
