AISC 5th Edition
AISC 5th Edition
(OP)
I am investigating a building that was designed back in 1960. I am looking at a coverplated column with a 14WF320 designation. I have looked at the AISC 5th Edition which appears to be the governing AISC version at that time, and the section of the manual with the WF shapes does not include the 14WF320 shape. However, in the axial capacity tables, a single table is provided for axial capacity values of the 14WF320 column with differing cover plate sizes. In the straight axial capacity table, the 14WF320 column is included with a *core section* note with asterisk. Does anyone know what was special about this particular column section? I found the specific size in the AISC Iron & Steel Beams 1873-1952 book but I was curious as to why it appears that this column was not intended to be used without coverplates. Any info from some of the oldtimers would be appreciated.
One other thing - The column was indicated as ASTM A440 steel in the plans. Based on the column schedule, it appears that the cover plates were also intended to be A440 steel. Was plate stock available in the "high strength" A440 steel back then?

RE: AISC 5th Edition
I have a copy of the 5th Edition and looked through it all. No commentary on what the "core" section meant. But speculating a bit I think it was simply a "vanilla" steel column section that allowed designers to place different cover plates on them.
So when the columns stacked up, at the splices you would have matching faces on the inside surfaces of the flanges and webs, allowing for easier detailing of splice plates and bolts/rivets.
So you would then have the freedom to design various sizes of columns without the mills having to roll lots of different shapes.

Any idea on the 5" thick cover plate steel? The column schedule just has a global A440 designation but the first time I can find the available steel grade is in the 7th Edition and 5" plate steel was A36 at that point. Does anyone have the 6th Edition? Can you check what the applicable ASTM Designation was for 5" plate stock? Thanks for all the help.
RE: AISC 5th Edition
It is interesting to note the typo on page 3-29 listing the core section as a 14WF820.
The plate girder top flange thicknesses only go up to 3" thick (pages 2-84 abd 2-85).
