Internal Ladder Rungs

Internal Ladder Rungs

Internal Ladder Rungs

(OP)
Are there any issues or concerns with full-pen. welding SA-36 ladder rungs on a SA-516-70N vessel? Vessel is in hydrogen and sour service.

A vessel fabricator has specified SA-36 for the ladder rungs, which to me is acceptable and has been done many times in the past. However, our materials specialist wanted the rungs made out of SA-516-70. The only way for the fabricator to do this is to cut the SA-516-70 plate into strips and machine them round.

RE: Internal Ladder Rungs

Doct..

Your materials speciallist should get out more and read the codes...

There are many ASME certified barstock materials in addition to SA 36 that would meet your needs. You do not have to machine SA 516-70N

The ladder does not have to have round rungs....IMHO they are not the best configuration anyway.

The set-up you show is normal.

RE: Internal Ladder Rungs

I have had to fight this same thing several times.

First off, the materials guy needs to be fired or trained.

if you customer is absolutely adament about that, you can get sa-350-lf2 bar stock but it is ridiculous to do this.

RE: Internal Ladder Rungs

MJC,
I love your comment," Your materials specialist should get out more..."   This kind of non-sense happened to me a couple of times over the years and it only funny when I look back now; but it wasn't then.
