Stamping tin-plated copper strip without lubricant

Stamping tin-plated copper strip without lubricant

(OP)
I need to stamp parts from annealed C-110 copper strip that is 0.005" thick and hot tin-dipped to 0.0005" thick both sides. The part dimensions are roughly 0.5" x 3.5", and the production volume is around 20 million pieces. Because of down-stream processing of the part I would strongly prefer to stamp the strip without any lubricant. Does anyone have any experience dry stamping this material - or any suggestions on die materials to reduce tooling wear?

RE: Stamping tin-plated copper strip without lubricant

I have no experience, but this seems like a case where diamond-like coating of the die should be considered.  It provides both high wear resistance, and low friction coefficient.

People who made Cu gaskets for us used the TD coating on some of their dies. I would give these people a call with your problem.

Zirconia ceramic might be the way to go, although I have to admit I don't know if the tin plate would cause a build up problem or not.  PVD Carbide is also another consideration.
