DIESEL ENGINE PERFORMANCE EVALUATION

DIESEL ENGINE PERFORMANCE EVALUATION

DIESEL ENGINE PERFORMANCE EVALUATION

(OP)
DEAR ALL,

I'M INTERESTED IN THE THEORETICAL METHOD / ALOGRITHMS USED IN EVALUATING THE PERFORMANCE A MARINE DIESEL ENGINE

MORE SPECIFICALLY I'M INTRESTING IN B&W S##MC-MCE, SULZER RTA-2 & 8 SERIES, AND YANMAR D/Gs

PLS NOTE THAT I'M AWARE THAT I'CAN USE THE INDICATOR DIAGRAMS TO CALCULATE POWER, BUT THE POINT IS TO DO WITH OUT THEM.

THANKS & BEST REGARDS

RE: DIESEL ENGINE PERFORMANCE EVALUATION

So then you must be familiar with BMEP and PLANK ?
The simple method is to contact the Engine manufacture, they will have all kinds of charts and information that can help you achieve what you are trying to do.
Please explain the end goal?

Dear Dicer,

Firstly thanks for your reply. Secondly I'm not familiar with PLANK, except if you mean the Kelvin - Planck interpretation of the 2nd thermodynamic law.

Finally the end goal is to be able to evaluate the performance of a specific power-plant( slow speed marine diesel and medium speed diesel generators), based on measurements from the crew onboard and based on the results of the analysis to give instructions for improvement / arrange for repairs,

RE: DIESEL ENGINE PERFORMANCE EVALUATION

I usually use an electronic pressure indicator. Without knowing the pressure at certain crank angles and exhust temperatures ther is no way of knowing the condition of each cylinder. There is one made by Malin UK.
http://www.malin.co.uk/about_malin.html
It is fairly inexpensive and easy to use. The good thing is that it has a feedback from the crankshaft so it knows exactly if the timing is late or early and you can see how much power each cylinder produces, Brilliant for trouble shooting, you see if the timing is out, compression is poor, injectors needs changing etc.

Good luck,

m

RE: DIESEL ENGINE PERFORMANCE EVALUATION

a handheld tool with flywheel probe (angle measurement) and pressure probe (indicator pressure) is a crucial tool if maintenance on fuelpumps is required(preventiv maintenance)The exhaust temperature measurement is a good indicator for corrective maintenance.
For a good performance it is crucial all cylinders are distributing the load evenly.
Measurement of produced power would be for the sulzer a to expencive method (torque propellor shaft and rpm)

RE: DIESEL ENGINE PERFORMANCE EVALUATION

IN B&W S##e series hand deployed PMI instrumentation interface to PC, parameters on screen gives you the idea of calculable values.

RE: DIESEL ENGINE PERFORMANCE EVALUATION

Hello CHSARANT,
I am curious why not simply measure or evaluate the engine performance as per their fuel consumption. After all, aren't we all looking to get the biggest bang for the lowest buck?
We evaluate performance as per the fuel consumption.
All the best.

Thank you all for your replies / advice. I've already include in my next year budget, cost for electronic indicator sensors with relevant software. Still under evaluation.

Thanks again.
