Steel bulb tees

Does anyone know where I can find the section properties for a W178 bulb tee?  It is being used to support a gypsum roof system.

Thanks!

RE: Steel bulb tees

What is a "bulb tee"?

The cross section looks like a WT (flange at the bottom) with a small "bulb" of steel at the top of the stem.  It is 2" in height.

Something like that.

Except the stem is centered on the flange.

Same idea as a post-tensioned concrete Bulb tee.

RE: Steel bulb tees

Is the bulb formed integrally with the WT, or it is added through other means. You should be able to calculate the sectional properties for either case. Or is this a commercial product?

It is not a composite section, if that is what you are asking.  I would imagine that it is a rolled shape much like a wide flange beam.

The only dimension I have is the height, so I am unable to calculate the section properties.

Thanks for your help, everyone.  I don't think that this size is still in production, but I will try contacting Western and see if they have any info for me.

Kelowna, that is not quite the shape that I'm referring to.  Check out the link posted by kslee and that will get you on the right track, although the flange is not tapered on the inside face and the "bulb" end is pretty square; not like a flange.

RE: Steel bulb tees

Glad you found the data.  We used to use a lot of those in the 60's and 70's in gymnasium roofs.  Tectum and Insulrock panels (wood fibre bound with cement) spanned between the double tees, and the space between the panels and double tees grouted.  This might be a useful addition to SlideRuleEra's site.
