Unfortunate choices in translation?

Unfortunate choices in translation?

Unfortunate choices in translation?

(OP)
Did we have a thread covering unfortunate choices of company or product names?
I just came across Cambodian airlines and decided that they were the ones to fly my wife around... the airline is named for her!

TYo be fair it probably means something real good in Cambodian but the initials do have that certain something in English.

RE: Unfortunate choices in translation?

This isn't a translation, just a company name that sparked a lot of contributions from Pub members.

Very funny.

Why does the state of Idaho never enter the annual Miss Ebonics contest?

RE: Unfortunate choices in translation?

Sometimes punctuation can result in an unfortunate translation:

(a)  Joe Brown said his neighbor is an idiot.

(b)  Joe Brown, said his neighbor, is an idiot.

RE: Unfortunate choices in translation?

That's because the english language is totally screwed up and one of the hardest to learn

RE: Unfortunate choices in translation?

It might well be totally screwed up - but a delight to understand and manipulate.

RE: Unfortunate choices in translation?

Some novels are a delight to read because of the way language is used.  I can't imagine that's true of novels written in languages that aren't "totally screwed up".  Imagine Martin Amis translated into German.

RE: Unfortunate choices in translation?

English is perhaps the most malleable language on the planet.  It's a shame that 90% of Earth's inhabitants don't get to share our delightfully silly and wicked puns and plays-on-words.  I spent a great deal of time in the Philippines, and Filipinos love to have fun with wordplay.  Those especially adept at it will combine their local dialect with a smattering of English to come up with the most bizarre and hilarious phrases.

I have to say that the funniest (and sometimes unfortunate) translations come from Taiwan, in their attempt to correlate an English word or phrase that will sound similar to their company name when spoken.  There are many needlessly cheerful and upbeat company names which make much more sense once you get to know their Mandarin name.
