double click dim

I know this is newbie question but it's finaly annoyed me enough to where I have to ask...

I can never get the same results when double clicking a dim to edit it. sometimes I get the dim dialog box sometimes I get the "white box thingy" that I can change the dim.  What is the difference? How do I get one over the other? Double click speed?  Is there any way to turn the white box off? I'd rather just the dim dialog box come up.

I've been struggling with this since whenever they added the "white box" 08 I think.

Here are some pics as Im not sure if "white box thingy" describes it well....

Thanks!

RE: double click dim

It has to do with Instant3D. Turn it off and you'll always get the "normal" edit box. With it on, it's hit or miss.
