Undergound Pipe for Sulfuric Acid (Drain)

Undergound Pipe for Sulfuric Acid (Drain)

Undergound Pipe for Sulfuric Acid (Drain)

(OP)
Undergroud pipe is designed for the sulfuric acid drain system. The concentration of the sulfuric acid is unknown. What kind of material is suitable for this service? How about plastic like PVC or CPVC (Chlorinated PVC)? I worry about that the plastic pipe can not resist the underground pressure.

Please advise.

RE: Undergound Pipe for Sulfuric Acid (Drain)

The following are the pipe materials we specify for underground acid bearing waste piping for commercial construction - educational labs, etc.

I have not specified them for sulfuric acid previously, so you will need to verify the concentration of the acid to determine if the materials are compatible.

High silicon iron ASTM A518 and A861, with hub end caulked joints.

Schedule 40 (PP) polypropylene ASTM D4101 and F1412 with fusion joints.

Schedule 40/80 (PVDF) polyvinylidene fluoride ASTM D-3222 and F1673, with fusion joints.

RE: Undergound Pipe for Sulfuric Acid (Drain)

I have had specs with double walled Sch 40/80 CPVC and leak sensors at the low points of the line.  I believe it was a 50% concentration.

If we assume the depth of bury is 6 ft. Is it ok for CPVC pipe?
