Fines in the Barrier System

Fines in the Barrier System

Fines in the Barrier System

(OP)
Hey Group

I have a plan 54 system using 'reclaimed' condensate

Temp is <40°C so we have seen no trouble there

The question is, it is thought the condensate could have solid/fines in it so a 12 micron filter is used on each system to protect the seal barrier seeing any solids.

These filters have been replaced several times now due to being blocked by particles larger than 12 microns.

So, I ask, do I need to filter at 12 Microns?
What particle size can enter the fluid film on the mechanical seal?

Do I need to consider ppm or % content of solids?
(I suspect this to be very low)

Is there a threshhold where you could say, for example, below 20ppm solids, a filter is not needed

SG is assumed to be > 1

What processes would you take to see if it is possible to safely eliminate the 12micron filter?

TIA

M

RE: Fines in the Barrier System

How often to do you replace the filter elements?

If you know that there are solids then you should filter before it enters the seal cavity.  The fact that the filter is blocking confirms solids are present.  Obviously, if you remove the filters there is a potential for the solids to enter between the faces.  If you are using Silicon Vs Carbon, the fine particles will enbed into the carbon and wear a groove in the Silicon then lose the film which leads to seal failure.  If you have Silicon vs Silicon the seal may survive a little longer but this will not neccessarily provide long seal life.

I would ensure that you have a duplex filter with DP alarm or change the piping plan to 53B.  Alternatively take a line from clean supply if you do not have the funds.

trust this helps
