Need 100A 12V brushless DC controller

Need 100A 12V brushless DC controller

Need 100A 12V brushless DC controller

(OP)
Hi,

We have a need for a brushless DC motor controller that can peak at 100A for a nominal 12 to 14V automotive supply.

The motor drives a hydraulic pump, so the duty is not continuous. Roughly 50A average.

None of the industrial drives I've found so far will run down to 12V supply, it's usually 24V minimum. Can anyone suggest a suitable drive?

Thanks, Ian

Murpia,

No I can't.  I'm currently working on an integrated Brushless Motor/Drive package for a Security Gate application.  24 VDC, 25 amps.  The customer is currently dong some performance tests using a commercially available motor and drive.  The project is bing managed by Randy Getz through the distributor Cymatix.  I'd suggest you contact him.

Thanks for the info on the Elmo unit.

That's the right kind of spec but most of the motion features would go unused in our application. If there's anything out there a little smaller but dumber, we'd be interested in that too.

Thanks, Ian

If you want to go bargain basement, maybe you could use something like this on ebay:

Reversible DC Motor Speed Control PWM Controller 100A

It's true there are a lot of 'hobby' controllers about that claim the right sort of spec.

However I don't really want to rely on something of that nature for a mission-critical hydraulic pump drive. Also they only run off an rc specific limited PWM interface and we'd need to interface with a 0-100% PWM duty.

And, I'd prefer something in an industrial / automotive enclosure.

Thanks, Ian

Something like http://www.4qd.co.uk/prod/proMk2.html perhaps?

No experience with them, just an ad I spotted a while ago: the company has been around for a fair few years so draw your own conclusions. I think it's fairly safe to say they're not in the class of a Eurotherm or Control Techniques drive, but then they aren't in that price range either. Plus they work on low voltage!

Hi Scotty,

That's a brushed drive not brushless. I did look at 4QD already to see if they had added brushless technology to their range but it seems not yet.

Sh;t, I missed that in your original post. Sorry. blush

The "RC Brushless Motor" comments jogged my memory  Try Aveox.  They started with RC Motor/Controllers but now probably have exactly what you require.

RE: Need 100A 12V brushless DC controller

I would strongly caution against a hobby model aircraft controller.  The environments they operate in are very different than the industrial world.  They are designed to run a short duration swinging a propeller that doesn't rapidly change load, and have adequate cooling air forced over their heat sinks.

I seem to remember Castle Creations (yes it is an RC company) having such a demand for industrial designs that they designed special controllers for industrial applications.  You might want to check them out and see if they ever released that product line.

If it is broken, fix it.  If it isn't broken, I'll soon fix that.

Thanks again.

Seems like Castle Creations have spun off an industrial product line:

between them and Aveox I think I can find what we need.
