API Piping Design Formula

API Piping Design Formula

API Piping Design Formula

(OP)
What is the Maximum Allowable working pressure formula for the API pipe?

RE: API Piping Design Formula

P = (2*S*E*t)/(D-2*y*t)

There are many design examples on the web.

RE: API Piping Design Formula

This formula is set forth in ASME B31.3 para 304.1.2 , I am looking for API formula.
By the way, S (Allwoable STress Value) must be selected as 0.8 X Minimum Yield strength or only Minimum Yield strength . please refer me to the clause of the code.
tnx

RE: API Piping Design Formula

Joli21,

Allowable stress is as tabulated for the listed approved materials.  It is NOT = 0.8 * SMYS

**********************
"Pumping accounts for 20% of the world's energy used by electric motors and 25-50% of the total electrical energy usage in certain industrial facilities."-DOE statistic (Note: Make that 99% for pipeline companies) http://virtualpipeline.spaces.live.com/

RE: API Piping Design Formula

Joli21,
You are confusing lacation safety factor F with API design factor. Under the alterantive rules provisions of Part 192 F may = 0.80 maximum. Use ASME B31.8 for design if gas. It must be understood that when one designs with F = .80,  additional testing and inspections of pipe, pipe line welding and the pipeline during service are mandated.
