Can we take a section in model (View->Operation->Section), similar to Revolved Section, or Stepped Section as in the drafting.

Of course, I can reorient the secion plane multiple times or use trim body or check it in the drafting itself, but it will be useful option if it is introduced, since from NX6 we are able to save the sections in model.

While you can rotate the 'cutting plane' about an axis, there is no way to create anything but 'full' sections since the technology used to create a so-called 'dynamic' section utilizes hardware clipping-planes.  By definition, hardware clipping-planes are infinite, therefore what you see on the screen will always be a 'full' section.

Thanks for updating the techniques used by the software.
As an user I am concerned with end result and if software is made to use a technique that will make it more userfriendly then it is better, what I feel.

As far as my question is concerned, at least Revolved section should be made possible by hardware clipping planes method. The reason is simple. As of now we have 3 options for creating sections

1 plane
2 parallel planes
Box (3 mutually perpendicular planes)

In the Box method, (or 2 parallel planes method), an option should exist for Defining the 3 section planes "Individually", I mean to say the 3 planes need not be "Mutually perpendicular" as they are now.

I suspect that it may be a limitation of the graphic interface language which we are using, but I'll try and verify that with the developer responsible for most of the tools used by the NX graphics subsystem.  I'll pass along anything I learn.

You can get the outside corner of a section in order to check your model using up to three planes in the cube mode. You cannot get the inside or concave corner because as John describes it the planes go through the model and don't stop where they intersect with one another.

For checking the model as is the intent of the tool this functionality is more than enough. I suspect that you'll want to create a few quick and easy images but for the moment at least that doesn't happen to be possible.

What I really miss is the ability to make some segments of a stepped section at angles.  True, the resulting projected section contains 'incorrect' or skewed geometry, but it does allow you to visualize more things in a single view.  Some geometry cannot be properly sectioned with perpendicular lines.

I tried the revolved section with multiple segments but unfortunately all segments pass through a common point.  

A sketch based section (like a competing product), which could be created/displayed in either drafting or modeling would probably allow all the freedom anybody is after.

This can be done either in a very easy to do manner by using the Section Model function found in the PMI Module (extra cost) where it automatically asks you to select the objects you wish sectioned, drops you into the sketcher to define the section profile, calculates how 'deep' the tool body needs to be to cut all selected objects, automatically assigns a user defined color to the cut faces as well as crosshatching if displayed as a wireframe, all from one dialog.  Or if you don't wish to spend the money, you can do basically the same thing, but you'll have to do all of the step separately and you're responsible for making sure that everything is covered by using the 'Assembly Cut' function.

Yes, too bad its an add-on.  The assembly cut method is getting to be a little involved being that it modifies geometry.

Hi John,
     In your example above, did you have to make two sections to get the cutout area to be 120 of the 360 degrees? I only see that the tool can project a planar closed sketch normal to it, unless I am missing something.

Nevermind.  I had not thought this through yet, just use a different plane to sketch on.  Then I wondered how do edit the section, but I found that also under the Edit menu, thanks.
