Overload for 1hr, how to?

Overload for 1hr, how to?

Overload for 1hr, how to?

(OP)
Hi,

I was reading that "Prime" rated generators can be overloaded for 1 hour every 12 hours. If I am mistaken, then assume it is the "Continuous" rating that can be overloaded ...

My question is: how can the generator be overloaded for 1 hour without the circuit breaker tripping?

I'm trying to figure the shape of the protection curve of the trip unit:
1. Infinite time on rated curremt
2. 1 hour on 1.1 x In (otherwise something "bad" will happen)
3. short circuit protection

I can't figure out point #2, if you can provide me with a hint much appreciated.

RE: Overload for 1hr, how to?

It's meant for the engine capabilities. You need to have appropriate alternator on it and  electrical protection.

You should check with the manufacturer as to what size breaker and what settings are appropriate for your installation. Without seeing the overall layout, I can't begin to suggest breaker sizing or settings.
But, if the generator is rated for 110% overload, the manufacturer will select the appropriate breaker. (Don't assume that all Prime sets can be overloaded. I have not seen continuous sets rated for overloading.
