Flare Radiation

Flare Radiation

(OP)

The crane cab is cited as one of the positions critical with respect to flare radiation. Should credit be taken if cab is air conditioned? If so, how do we factor A/C into the radiant heat predictions.

RE: Flare Radiation

'Worst Case Credible Scenario' Approach is most suited approach for safety reasons and

An analytical approach considering, As If we, are ourself exposed to that particular risk/ hazardous situation. Should be the guiding concept for a way forward I believe.

If we want to take that A/C credit for our life then;same may be considered for others.

Actually the basic Issue remains,as;Safe Escape Possibilities(If any!)exist or not?

Hope this gives a slightly varying view on your query.

RE: Flare Radiation

Hi Steve

For calculating the Flare Radiation in a worse case scenario you have to consider worst wind strength from the worst direction at the same time as you have a major plant upset. As the A/C unit is electrical powered then if the major upset is a power failure then you cannot take credit for it anyway. Most crane cabs have pull down blinds to shield the operator from the sun/flare but again these cannot fully be relied on.
In teh event of an emergency the operator will have to safely lower or secure his load before exiting the cab.More of  a concern is the level of radiation once he exits as this results in high temperatures on the ladder as he tries to make  a safe exit.
In my "expert" opinion i would not take credit the A/C.
