VFD tripping breaker

VFD tripping breaker

VFD tripping breaker

(OP)
We experienced a couple of breaker trips recently while we were connecting VFDs to MCC. We are speculating it was Line side Harmonic causing the tripps, especially those DC components in Harmonics. Therefore we are thinking of adding a harmonic filter to the MCC to mitigate the HTD. Any inputs would be appreciated.

RE: VFD tripping breaker

I'm not clear why you are "speculating".
Has it always tripped?
Has it ever worked?
Is the breaker the correct size as per the VFD manufacturers handbook?
There are numerous checks and questions you should go through before you speculate.
Why spend money on a harmonic filter (is this a line reactor or complex passive filter?) if it is simply that the breaker is undersized for the job?
Is it a ground fault breaker? If yes, VFD's will have a high level of leakage current as standard and the type of GF breaker you have may not be suitable for use on a VFD.
Engineers speculate about the weather, not faults on an electrical supply.
