two issues setting up PDMWorks

two issues setting up PDMWorks

two issues setting up PDMWorks

(OP)
I have two questions related to setting up PDMWorks:

1) is PDMWorks Workgroup VaultAdmin the only place where I can make new projects? Or is there a possibility to make new projects(new folders in other words) trough my SolidWorks Professional 2008 PDMWorks ad-in as well?

2) is there a possibility to disable this "default save in folder for Open and Check Out"? It is so annoying that when I check out a document from Vault just for viewing, SW has to save a complete copy into this sw folder(see image attached). I would like that when I open a document from Vault, it does not save a copy anywhere other than a temp folder. How to accomplish that?

RE: two issues setting up PDMWorks

I'm not a vault admin, but we use PDMWorks.  We have 2 folders that we put projects in: "In Design" (which we put projects going through prototype/r&d) and "Projects" (which are projects we have purchase orders for). If I want to create a folder, I right-click the "In Design" folder and pick "Create SubProject".   This is done while I'm in Solidworks and I have the PDM add-in turned on.

As for folders to open projects, every time you open a project you get the "Get Local Copy and Open Document" dialog box.  Pick the column that has the label "Save In Folder" and the whole column will high-light.  Now in the "Save In Folder" field you can browse to where you want to put the local copies in.  I usually start a new folder in Windows Explorer, copy that location, and paste it into the "Save In Folder" field.  Either way works.

Hope this helps.

m4rtin86,
Answer to question 1 - Yes
Answer to question 2 - Yes

1. In Vault Admin tool under Vault Settings tab, put a check in "Allow users to create sub projects".
2. In SolidWorks Explorer, in the "Options" button under "Folders" tab, set the Use folder: to what ever. You will have to Browse... typing in does not work.

RE: two issues setting up PDMWorks

Caveat to Answer to Question 1: only admins can create root folders, and even then, they can only be created in the vault admin tool.

Caveat to Answer to Question 2: While you can set the system to dump files wherever this can rapidly get out of hand if you aren't paying attention to the location the files are being dropped in. The system will use whatever the last location you browsed to in Windows Explorer, not SolidWorks explorer. This has led large assemblies being dropped in network locations, other, random locations on the owner's machine, etc. On the whole we've found it better to save to one default location and just maintain that location. I've yet to come across a PDM user doing anything differently.
