I'm creating welded steel assemblies or weldments.  Some holes must be done after assembly, so these I make as machining features (not at part level).  Others holes it really doesn't matter if the fabricator makes it before or after assembly.  However, it matters to me because it determines if my individual parts are opp. hand or not. (at part level).  For example, in my parts list do I want a qty of 2 for a particular piece or do I want 1 left and 1 right.  Its just the bolt hole making that piece of the weldment handed.  I'm curious if anyone has any advice on this.  My company is not the fabricator by the way.

Are both LH and RH drilled independent of each other or are they both put into a weldment then drilled to become handed.  Say "Part 1" is the unhanded piece you can drop it into an assembly then do the machining op and create Part 1 LH and do it again with opposite hole patter to create Part 1 RH.  Now you have two assemblies that when documented will call for Part 1 in the BOM.  

You can create two different parts a RH and LH that are opposite.  Create the first one "Part 1" with the holes, then create a new part by derivng Part 1 and mirroring it (assuming they are mirrored differences) during creation and changes to one will always be reflected by the other. And the BOM will show needing two parts with two machine ops.

Its really up to fabricator on which ways best.  Do they want one blank to make both parts or two parts setting on the shelves.  Option 1 when you do a parts only BOM reflects you need two of Part 1 with two different machine ops and option 2 shows you need two independent parts.
