Pressure vessel plate

Pressure vessel plate

(OP)
My company has been asked to fabricate some pressure vessels,
The material specified is sa516 70 the lead time on this plate is too long, Where SA/AS1548 7 490n is readily
available (vessel 40mm tk gas scrubber), Would this be an acceptable substitute to verify the drawings to AS1210
class 1.Currently drawings are ASME VIII(very similar codes).The vessels are for use in australia hence reverification to AS1210
7490n is listed on bluescope steels web site as xlerplate.
Any help would be greatly appreciated

RE: Pressure vessel plate

gtlord;
The only practical advice I could give is to contact the regulatory body in Australia that will be involved with issuing operating certificates for these new vessels and discuss the scope of fabrication work with the owner's insurance agency (insurer of the vessels). You just can't assume equivalent material and design rules because the Codes look similar. What seems like a rather straightforward fabrication job may be more complex than you can imagine.

What it appears to me is that you are reverse engineering existing vessels that were designed to ASME B&PV Code, Section VIII, Div 1 and are assuming that this vessel design will work under AS. This is a wrong assumption.

RE: Pressure vessel plate

gtlord;

ASME II- D_2007 lists the material SA/AS-1548-7-490N as well and equivalent material to the ASME 516 Gr70 in strength, temperature properties and welding requirements, and acceptable for ASME VIII Div 1 and ASME I upto 538 deg C.

However, you need to get confirmation from the design/client to use this material. I do not see any problem to use this material otherwise.

Kind regards,

Thank You for taking the time to answer my question, Both very helpful answers.As we have been supplied with the
vessel calcs and have good access to the vessels design company,Also taking note of Ibrahims advice and the fact that AS 1200 pressure equipment links AS1210 and ASME VIII
regarding design for general pressure vessels(table 2.1 page 10).This should hopefully make design verification
BY third party engineers for worksafe (regulatory body)
 run a bit smoother than i first envisaged
Thanks again
