Full Voltage Starter for a Delta Connection

Full Voltage Starter for a Delta Connection

Full Voltage Starter for a Delta Connection

(OP)
I have a GE 4.16 KV motor, 500 HP, air compressor, 6 leads suitable for a Star-Delta starter, so it is my first time that I have just a simple full Voltage starter and I was looking any information from vendor in order to know if we can to proceed with a Delta star to continue in Delta-Run, considering a high inrush current about 6 or 7 times FLA.
Any comments from you guys I'll appreciate.

RE: Full Voltage Starter for a Delta Connection

You need to work with some experienced persons like your supervisor or a Sr. engineer at your place of work.

This is too basic a question to be asked by person dealing with 4.16kV and 500HP motor.

Hi RBulsara.. i'm sorry I have 5 years workiing with different bigger MV motors with only 3 leads to autotransformer reduced voltage starter and full-voltage starters  and 7 years in Pakistan/Iraq and Afganistan with 6 leads motors for a soft star-Delta starter, but this is my first time with a full Voltage starter and looking for any vendor information but notting so far. I know my be a stupid question but some times the winding inside motor are suitable to start on star connection and stay on Running.

RE: Full Voltage Starter for a Delta Connection

If it is a 4160V motor intended for wye-delta start and you want to run it full-voltage start on 4160V, it will need to be connected in delta.  If you want to run it on 7200V, it needs to be connected in wye.  If you connect it in wye on 4160V, it will never make it to 500HP and will have a very short life.

RE: Full Voltage Starter for a Delta Connection

What davidbeach said. You positively need to establish if the motor is indeed intended to run in star OR  delta to provide 500HP. Then you can keep it connected in permanent star OR delta and use the full voltage start as long as your system can take it and voltage dips are acceptable.

It is also true that most MV motors are intended to run in star configuration, but I would not make any assumptions without mfr. or nameplate data.

Melco

Are you saying that you have star-delta starter for 4.16 KV ?
