For a very good introduction you can try the book by Broek: "Practical Use of Fracture Mechanics". It is quite expensive but you could try Alibris for a used copy.
Read any of the numerous articles and papers by Tom Swift of the FAA.
Google the paper "Rough Diamond" by Steve Swift (CASA Australia) and Bob Eastin (FAA).
