Who has Authority to change a stamped Nameplate?

Who has Authority to change a stamped Nameplate?

Who has Authority to change a stamped Nameplate?

(OP)
Gentlemen,

Our client has asked us to change "Tag Numbers" on two vessels that were shipped to site on a fabricated skid.

My response is that we are not allowed to do so on your instructions because we are not the "Authorized Inspector".

We will change the Numbers if the Authorized Inspector is present but is this still okay??

Any input would be appreciated.  Code used is Section VIII.

Thanks

RE: Who has Authority to change a stamped Nameplate?

The tag number is the Client's name for his vessel and he should be able to rename his equipment without asking permission, perhaps a piece of paper to document this change. However, changing the nameplate is something to be documented, recorded and approved by the AI.
cheers,
gr2vessels

RE: Who has Authority to change a stamped Nameplate?

the item (tag) number of a vessel is not code documentation and is not recorded on u-1a.   should be no problem to change...as long

the drawings change
the calcs change
the data book changes

you should take a before and after picture of name plate after grinding the old number off and restamping.

if you decide to change the whole name plate.....then the AI should be alerted before starting so he can be there to witness the change out and check for proper code stamping to match the old plate.

Cuemaster64;
Your post is confusing. In your Subject title you refer to a nameplate. Yet in the body of the post you refer to tag numbers. Are the tag numbers stamped on the nameplate?

If so, you cannot alter a nameplate (not a tag) that is Code stamped without approval from the AI.

Thank you very much Gentlemen,

The Client now has said that they are going to get approval from our local AI to do the work.

It has been bandied about here for the last couple of days and we as the Contractor agree that whatever
is stamped on the Nameplate (be it a "Tag Number" etc.) it can not be altered without the AI's approval.

Once again thank you for your time and remarks on this question.  I will try and improve my Questions and thread titles in the future.

Regards,

Eric

RE: Who has Authority to change a stamped Nameplate?

The jurisdiction is who you should be asking, if they have a pressure vessel law. The National Board website has a specific form you can download to send to the jurisdiction notifying them of a nameplate change (if it is a Code nameplate.) The Jurisdiction then has the option of witnessing or delegating to the AI. It is form NB-136, link is http://www.nationalboard.org/SiteDocuments/Online%20Ordering/NB-136.pdf

As stated before, if Tag numbers are not on Code nameplate, above does not apply.
